Tropical Storm Helene develops in the Caribbean, posing a potential threat to Florida as it strengthens into a major hurricane.

Helene is projected to make landfall in Florida as a major hurricane on Thursday. Hurricane Watches have been issued along the Gulf Coast, with more expected in the coming days. The storm is forecast to be large and powerful, potentially affecting areas as far north as Atlanta. Florida's governor has declared a state of emergency for 61 counties, urging residents to prepare for a dangerous and destructive event as the window to take necessary precautions closes.

TAMPA – Tropical Storm Helene formed in the northwestern Caribbean Sea on Tuesday morning, placing Florida on high alert for significant impacts later this week, including a dangerous storm surge, heavy flooding, and destructive hurricane-force winds.

Helene, previously designated Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, is now the eighth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) predicts it will strengthen into a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) as it approaches Florida’s Big Bend region.
